The 2025 Competitive School Sport Annual Dance Competition recently took place at Troon Concert Hall.

The event, organised by South Ayrshire Council's Thriving Communities team, saw over 580 young people from 29 South Ayrshire primary and secondary schools take part. In addition to this, 40 dances from a range of styles were performed during the competition including cheer, street, jazz and lyrical.

To prepare for the competition, after school dance sessions were led by teacher and parent volunteers and Active Schools Dance Leaders.

There are over 30 Dance Leaders in the South Ayrshire Active Schools Leadership Academy - an exciting programme that provides young people with the opportunity to become young leaders in sport and physical activity.

The Academy incorporates coach education, employability skills, marketing and event planning by providing young people with training, mentoring and qualifications. Participants gain valuable experiences in a variety of areas such as sport and dance leadership, becoming a decision maker, competition organiser and technical official.

The young people taking part in the competition were able to showcase their performance skills on stage whilst working together as a team. The winners of the six categories were:

P1-3 - Newton Primary School
P4-7 - Kingcase Primary School
S1-3 - Belmont Academy
S4-6 - Belmont Academy
Dance Leader - Kincaidston Primary School
Spirit of Sport - Marr College

South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Education and Lifelong Learning, Councillor William Grant said: "The annual dance competition is a fantastic initiative for young people to express themselves on stage through the creativity of dance. It's fantastic to see so many South Ayrshire schools support this competition which fosters confidence, communication, and teamwork. The young people who took part should be very proud of themselves."

South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Leisure and Community Services, Councillor Chris Cullen said: "It is well known that opportunities for sport and physical activity are invaluable, so I was absolutely delighted to see such a huge number of young people participate in this year's annual dance competition. The commitment of our volunteers, coaches and Dance Leaders enables our young people to experience new opportunities, make friends and flourish in their chosen sport.  This is incredibly important, and I'm pleased that we have been able to celebrate and recognise these achievements."
