South Ayrshire Council launches £2 million regeneration programme for Maybole
Issued 26/3/26
South Ayrshire Council has announced the first phase of a new regeneration programme for Maybole.
An investment of £2 million will be used to strengthen the town centre, support local businesses, and enhance public spaces for residents and visitors.
The programme builds on the Maybole Regeneration Project which led to the transformation of the town hall, the refurbishment of Goudie's, and the creation of a community hub in the former charity shop. The rejuvenation of the town's 16th century castle is expected to be completed later this year.
Following detailed discussions with local ward councillors, three initial projects will be progressed as part of the new regeneration programme:
£250,000 will be made available for a Maybole Shopfront Improvement Scheme. The new grant scheme will support shop owners and tenants to refresh and enhance building frontages within a defined area. The initiative aims to improve the town's appearance, boost footfall, and encourage business investment. Further details will be provided to councillors in September 2026.
£125,000 will be invested in three council‑owned buildings (No.6-8, No.14 and No.16) in School Vennell. The properties will receive safety and appearance upgrades to support long‑term occupancy and encourage neighbouring owners to invest in their own properties.
£600,000 is allocated to improve the Greenside area which sits between the high street and the train station. At present, the location is used for community events, markets, and gatherings. Plans will aim to reinforce the Greenside as a key arrival space to Maybole, enhance the quality of it, and improve connections to the high street. Community engagement will take place to explore these and other options. Recommendations will return to Council in September 2026.
Other potential projects will be identified and brought before councillors in due course.
Kevin Braidwood, Depute Chief Executive and Director of Housing, Operations and Development for South Ayrshire Council said: "Investing £2 million in Maybole's regeneration marks a decisive step in strengthening the town's future. This programme is about giving Maybole the vibrant, welcoming town centre its community deserves. By improving shopfronts, upgrading key buildings, and reimagining Greenside, we're creating places where people want to spend time and feel connected."
