Two South Ayrshire athletes have represented Team GB at the 2025 European Sprint Duathlon Championships in Rumia, Poland (April 26-27), making  a strong impression on the international stage.

Adrian Young and Joshua Kean, both part of South Ayrshire Council's Talented Athlete Programme, competed in the age group races, demonstrating speed, determination and resilience.

Adrian, racing in the 35-39 category, placed ninth with a finishing time of 56:15, achieving a personal best of 16:50 in the 5K run. He has already qualified for next year's European event. Joshua, who competed in the 20 to 24 category, crossed the finish line in 59:43 and placed an impressive fifth.

Adrian said: "This was my first time competing for GB, and the experience exceeded all expectations. The Talented Athlete Programme has made a real difference to my training particularly in strength and conditioning.  I'm now focused on improving my 5K time and bike performance."

Joshua said: "Representing Team GB in only my second duathlon was incredible. The support from South Ayrshire Council's Talented Athlete Programme - especially access to the pool at the  Citadel  and the new track at the Riverside Sports Arena - has been a massive help as I prepare for my next goal- a full Ironman in Leeds this July."

The Council's Talented Athlete Programme provides free access to swim and gym facilities to help remove barriers to participation and support local athletes aiming to compete at elite levels.

Councillor Brian Connolly, Leader of South Ayrshire Council, said: "We are incredibly proud of Adrian and Joshua's achievements. Representing Team GB is a remarkable accomplishment, and it's fantastic to see the positive impact of our Talented Athlete Programme. It shows our commitment to nurturing home-grown talent and supporting success on the national and international stage."

South Ayrshire Council continues to back athletes across a range of disciplines, with a refreshed Talented Athlete Programme set to launch later this year.
