Positive inspection report praises Holmston Primary staff and pupils

NEWS UPDATED

Holmston Primary School recently received a positive inspection report from Education Scotland.

A team of inspectors from His Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) visited Holmston Primary School in January 2026 to conduct an inspection, working closely with staff and engaging with parents, carers, and pupils during the visit.

The school was marked as "very good" or "good" across all areas examined, and a number of key strengths were identified within the findings of the report.

The headteacher was praised for his highly effective leadership and for creating a culture for staff and pupils that is innovative, inspiring, and encourages learning. A warm, welcoming, and inclusive ethos within the school fosters positive relationships between the senior leadership team, staff, and pupils.

Staff were commended for developing exciting, high-quality, and well-planned approaches to learning and teaching. It was also highlighted that they are effective in supporting wellbeing and provide effective feedback to help motivate children to succeed.

As a result, children engage enthusiastically with lessons and enjoy learning. Inspectors found the pupils at Holmston Primary to be articulate and confident in learning independently, in groups, or in pairs and treat other children with respect.

George Docherty, South Ayrshire Council's Assistant Director of Education, said: "This is fantastic news for Holmston Primary. The leadership team and staff should be very proud of this glowing report which highlights their dedication to providing an engaging learning environment and making sure pupils feel safe and supported.

"I'm delighted to see the school receive the recognition it deserves, and I'm sure the head teacher and staff will continue to work with parents and pupils to maintain high standards, building upon this momentum and continuing to raise attainment."
