Positive inspection report commends Symington Primary School and Early Years Centre
Symington Primary School and Early Years Centre (EYC) were highly praised in a recent report by Education Scotland. The school and EYC were marked as "very good" across all areas examined.
In December 2025, inspectors from His Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) visited Symington Primary School to conduct an inspection, engaging with parents, carers, children and school staff to prepare the report.
They identified a high level of attainment across the school and noted that children benefit from a wide range of opportunities to achieve within and beyond the classroom. Inspectors also identified that teachers delivered a highly effective teaching approach that has resulted in well-developed reading skills and fostered a culture that motivates pupils to read for enjoyment.
The head teacher, depute head teacher, and staff were commended for creating an inclusive atmosphere where children feel valued and supported, motivating them to learn and engage positively in all aspects of school life. This was reflected in the attitudes of the motivated and confident children, who demonstrated a strong sense of pride in their school and acted kindly and respectfully towards one another.
Inspectors from HMIE and the Care Inspectorate also gave a positive report for Symington EYC, highlighting the warm, nurturing and responsive care delivered by staff, promoting emotional security, resilience, and positive relationships.
Exciting and purposeful learning environments, both indoors and outdoors, allowed children to develop skills including numeracy in a fun and engaging way. The report noted that children are empowered to be confident and independent and, as such, make very good progress across all aspects of their learning and development.
Kay Shields, Headteacher of Symington Primary School, said: "We're very proud to receive such a positive report that recognises the hard work and positive attitudes of our dedicated staff and fantastic pupils. At Symington, we're committed to providing a high standard of teaching and care for every child. Thank you to all our staff, pupils, and families for their ongoing support."
South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Education and Lifelong Learning, Councillor William Grant, said: "This report highlights the wonderful work happening at Symington Primary School and Early Years Centre. The headteacher, leadership team, and staff should be very proud of their achievements. They've created a learning environment where children are not only motivated to make fantastic progress, but one where they feel welcome, supported and cared for."
