Drowning Prevention Week 2026
Drowning Prevention Week takes place from 13 June - 20 June and is one of the largest water safety campaigns across the UK and Ireland.
With summer now here, many will be making plans to visit beaches, pools, rivers and lochs so it's important that we all know how to stay safe and familiarise ourselves with The Water Safety Code which can be found here.
At South Ayrshire Council, we are committed to empowering individuals with essential life skills. To do this, we engage with 2500 children each week and have many initiatives to support this including:
- Providing a fully inclusive pathway into the South Ayrshire Swim Team
- Running GP Referral swim classes
- Delivering comprehensive 10-week swimming programmes for Primary School aged children
- Supporting nursery aged children in basic core aquatic skills
- 1-1 swimming classes
- Delivering crash courses and swim clinics
- Swimming teacher training
South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Leisure and Community Services, Councillor Chris Cullen, said: "Drowning Prevention Week is a vital campaign that allows us to share invaluable information and resources to ensure everyone can enjoy water safely. Here in South Ayrshire, we have access to many breathtaking beaches, rivers and bodies of water and we therefore must ensure people are informed of the actions they can take to follow The Water Safety Code which will ultimately help in an emergency to save lives."
