Council Launches Ambitious Sustainable Development and Climate Change Strategy 2025-2030

South Ayrshire Council has launched its Sustainable Development and Climate Change Strategy for 2025-2030.
Building on the success of the first strategy which was introduced five years ago, this comprehensive plan outlines our commitment to promoting sustainable development, addressing the climate emergency, and ensuring that everyone can benefit from a low carbon economy.
The strategy sets out clear targets, including achieving net zero by 2045 and reducing measured organisational emissions by 75% by 2030.
Significant progress has already been made; in 2024 and 2025 we reduced electricity and gas consumption in our buildings by 11% and 7% respectively.
We have also helped residents reduce their energy bills through the installation of external wall insulation. So far, 572 council properties have benefitted, along with 871 private homes.
The strategy outlines other initiatives put in place to help tackle the climate emergency, such as the use of old Christmas trees to encourage sand dune restoration on the shore by Blackburn Road Car Park in Ayr.
Wildlife has benefitted from the creation of wetlands at Belleisle Golf Course, which also collect and hold excess water during periods of heavy rainfall.
Key initiatives planned for the next five years include the development of an Ayrshire Coastal Change Adaptation Plan to support vulnerable coastal communities and the launch of a Stepping Stones project to connect communities with nature.
Councillor Martin Kilbride, Housing and Property Services Policy Lead at South Ayrshire Council said: "This strategy reflects on our successes to date, including consistently remaining on track to meet our 2030 and 2045 emissions reduction targets as set by the Council in 2020.
"We want to fully engage with people who live and work in South Ayrshire as we transition to a low-carbon, climate resilient future. This will help us address any social / economic inequalities arising from climate change or climate action.
