Civic Reception held to celebrate 700 years of Ayr Guildry

Ayr Guildry

A civic reception was held in County Buildings, Ayr on Friday 20 June to celebrate Ayr Guildry's 700th Anniversary.

Provost Iain Campbell opened the ceremony with a speech, welcoming members of Ayr Guildry and esteemed guests to County Hall to mark the momentous occasion, and reflect on the close working partnership between the Guildry and South Ayrshire Council.

Ayr Guildry was established in 1325 by the Merchants and Craft Guilds of Ayr to regulate and promote trade. In the 700 years following, the Guildry has committed to helping local business thrive, promoted trade throughout Scotland, and encouraged values of civic pride and positive citizenship through a number of award schemes.

South Ayrshire Council's Provost, Iain Campbell said: "I'm delighted we could host a celebration to mark this milestone anniversary. Remembering our rich local history is of the utmost importance, and for the Guildry to continue to exist today and have outlived the Aztec empire, whose capital was also established in 1325, what an astounding achievement that is!

"The Guildry has remained dedicated, after all these years, to encouraging a thriving local economy and bolstering a sense of community spirit and pride within Ayr. I wish them many, many more successful years to come!"
