Burns Statue Square - project update
Issued 20/3/26
South Ayrshire Council and Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA) are looking to engage with the public on ambitious plans to transform Burns Statue Square into a vibrant, welcoming gateway to Ayr town centre.
Councillors are set to receive an update on the scheme at a council meeting on 26 March. If the stakeholder engagement is agreed by councillors, ARA will launch a major public engagement programme to ensure the community helps shape the project.
Proposed public engagement would include drop‑in events, as well as consultation with businesses and residents and regular digital updates throughout the design process.
Designs and visualisations of the emerging proposals would be shared with councillors and the public as the project takes shape.
The main aim of the project is to replace the current traffic‑dominated layout on the square with a high‑quality public space that celebrates local heritage, improves walking connections, and enhances the overall experience for residents, businesses and visitors.
The UK Government's Levelling Up Fund (LRF) has provided £16m funding to the project.
Kevin Braidwood, Depute Chief Executive and Director of Housing, Operations and Development for South Ayrshire Council said: "This is a once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity to reshape one of Ayr's most important gateways. Burns Statue Square has huge potential, and we want to create a space that feels welcoming, accessible and truly reflective of our community. We're looking forward to working closely with residents, businesses and stakeholders to bring this vision to life."
A further report will be presented to Council in September 2026 seeking approval of the final design.
