Food Recycling Project
As part of a new campaign to reduce waste, boost recycling rates and protect the environment we are calling on residents to make full use of their food recycling caddies.
Every year, households across Scotland throw away thousands of tonnes of food that could be recycled. When food waste goes into the general waste bin it is sent to an 'energy from waste' facility for incineration. The cost of processing food waste by incineration is five times more expensive and less environmentally friendly than recycling it.
By using their food recycling caddies, residents can ensure that this waste is processed and turned into renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser. The facility we use has the capacity to process up to 120,000 tonnes of organic waste annually. The waste is transformed into enough renewable energy to power almost 18,000 Scottish homes annually, whilst also producing over 100,000 tonnes of nutrient-rich biofertilizer per year to support sustainable agriculture.
The campaign will be rolled out in phases over the next two years, individually targeting each area of South Ayrshire. As part of the initiative, every household will receive an information leaflet through the post.
