Council appoints new Assistant Director of Education

Following a robust recruitment and competitive interview process, South Ayrshire Council has appointed George Docherty as its new Assistant Director of Education.

Working collaboratively with the Director of Education, George will offer strategic leadership and continue to support the delivery of high-quality educational services across South Ayrshire.

George is currently Head Teacher at Marr College, having taken up the post in 2018.

He began his career as a secondary teacher in 1999 at Mainholm Academy before progressing to Principal Teacher of Guidance at Prestwick Academy. A further 12 years as Depute Head Teacher in Prestwick strengthened his commitment to improving outcomes for all learners.

George holds an MSc in Educational Leadership from the University of Stirling and currently serves as a Professional Verifier for their Into Headship programme. He is an Associate Assessor with His Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) and an Education Scotland Non-Executive Board Member.

South Ayrshire Council's Director of Education, Scott Mulholland, said: "I'm delighted to welcome George into the role of Assistant Director of Education, where his proven commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people will be invaluable. South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Education and Life Long Learning, Councillor William Grant, said: "The depth of experience and knowledge George has demonstrated throughout his career will greatly strengthen the fantastic work that's already being carried out in our schools and early years centres. I'm thrilled to see George securing this post and I'm confident that his leadership will inspire continued progress across South Ayrshire's education services."

George Docherty said: "I'm delighted to be appointed as Assistant Director of Education, supporting the Director in leading the work of Education Services. Having worked for over twenty years in South Ayrshire schools, I feel privileged to continue serving in the area I care deeply about and look forward to working with staff, children, families and communities to continue improving outcomes for our children and young people."

George's start date will be confirmed in the new year.
