Girvan Academy Unveils New Theatre
South Ayrshire Council is delighted to announce that the refurbishment works to the theatre at Girvan Academy are now complete.
The theatre has had a complete renovation and improvements include a new auditorium which holds 140 seated guests; new flooring and stage curtains; plus an accessible viewing area.
Additionally, a new state-of-the-art audio visual and lighting system has been installed, with a new control room; LED lighting rig; speakers and transmitters; projector; and a 4.8 meter projection screen with two new 65" LCD displays mounted on either side of the stage.
The totally transformed theatre is the only events space of this size in the Girvan area and will greatly benefit the school, allowing provision of school shows; concerts; prize giving; and a range of extra-curricular activities. The theatre will also strengthen community cohesion, allowing local residents from Girvan and the surrounding villages to let the space for a range of events such as community meetings; film showings; touring theatrical performances; and keep fit classes.
The renovations were made possible thanks to part funding from South Ayrshire Council's Ward Capital Projects programme and the Carrick Futures Community Benefit Fund, secured by Girvan Academy Parent Council and SURF - Scotland's Regeneration Forum.
South Ayrshire Council's Depute Leader and Policy Lead for Commercial/Operational Services, Councillor Alec Clark, said: "The Ward Capital Projects programme aims to make vital improvements which benefit our local communities, so I'm delighted that the new Girvan Academy theatre was included within this. The refurbished space will be a focal point for residents of Girvan and the surrounding rural villages.
South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Education and Lifelong Learning, Councillor William Grant, said: "The theatre is an important asset to Girvan Academy and the upgrades that have been carried out will allow for pupils and staff to organise an array of activities in the heart of the school. I look forward to attending future events and seeing the how the space is used."
South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Leisure and Community Services, Councillor Chris Cullen, said: "The new theatre is a fantastic and much needed event space which will allow the local community to come together. Thanks to the funding provided as part of the Ward Capital Projects programme and by the Carrick Futures Community Benefit Fund, local residents now have a great place to meet, socialise and enjoy."
SURF Scotland's Regeneration Forum Girvan Facilitator, Zanne Domoney-Lyttle, said: "Regeneration of our towns and villages is important as a means of providing essential facilities that everyone is proud of. The new theatre at Girvan Academy is another part of Girvan's regeneration story and as a result of the activities and events that can now take place, it will instil a real sense of community strength."
