Important Dates

• The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Tuesday 18 June. Register now.
• The deadline for applying for a postal vote, or postal proxy applications, and for changes to existing postal or proxy votes is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June. Apply now.
• The deadline for receiving new applications to vote by proxy (not postal proxy or emergency proxies) is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June. Apply now.

Everyone who chooses to vote in person at the General Election will need to show photo ID at the polling station. Accepted forms of ID include a passport; photocard driving licence; older persons or disabled persons bus pass; and Young Scot card. More information and a full list of accepted ID is available.

If you do not have a suitable photographic ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline for applying for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

Information for press and media

The count for the UK General Election will be held on Thursday 4 July at The Citadel Leisure Centre, South Harbour Street, Ayr, KA7 1JB.

All media representatives who wish to attend the count must apply for a media accreditation pass.  Representatives who do not receive official accreditation from South Ayrshire Council will not be permitted entry to the count centre.  If you are interested in attending, please email communications@south-ayrshire.gov.uk to request a media accreditation application form.  

The deadline for submitting an application is 4.00pm on Thursday 20 June.

Postal vote changes for UKGeneral Election 2024

Please return your postal vote using the Royal mail service

There are changes to voting by post affecting voters, parties and campaigners. These changes only apply to UK Parliamentary Elections and will affect the UK General Election which is taking place on 4 July

Please familiarise yourself with the new arrangements as failure to follow these changes will result in postal votes being rejected.

New restrictions

There are new restrictions on the handling of postal votes, limiting the number of postal votes a voter can hand in and where they can be handed in.

Failure to follow these changes will result in postal votes being rejected. 

How can I return my postal vote?

Where possible, postal votes should be returned using the Royal Mail service. The first issue of postal voting packs will be sent out to residents from 19 June onwards; the final issue will be 26 June - allowing sufficient time for them to be returned by post ahead of 4 July. This is a free service.

Can I submit my postal vote in person?

Our preference would be for you to use the Royal Mail service, but you are permitted to submit a maximum of 5 postal ballot packs plus your own (6 in total) in person at a designated location. 

Postal votes can be handed in to South Ayrshire Council, but please note that they will only be accepted at one location - Reception, Council Headquarters, County Buildings, Wellington Square, Ayr, KA7 1DR.

Postal votes can be handed in to County Buildings during normal office hours (Monday to Thursday 9am - 4.45pm and Friday 9am - 4pm) and up until 10pm on polling day, Thursday 4 July 2024.

Officers from our Election Team will be on hand to assist.

PLEASE NOTE:

If you attempt to hand in more than 6 postal votes in person, these will be rejected - you may be asked to pop them in a Royal Mail postbox instead (if time allows).

As part of the new process for this election you will be asked to complete a Postal Vote Return Form for any postal votes you hand over in person. Voters will need to include their name and address, how many postal votes they are handing in and why they are handing in those postal votes. This is to help eradicate election fraud.

Failure to follow these changes will result in postal votes being rejected. 

If a Postal Vote Return Form is not completed when you hand in postal votes, these postal votes will be rejected.

If a Postal Vote Return Form is completed and you attempt to hand in more postal votes than is allowed, all of these votes will be rejected apart from your own.
