In addition to identifying these special elements the Appraisal puts forward measures for their preservation or enhancement to be prioritised. It will also enable planning officers to assess more readily the potential impact of proposals for new development on the character, appearance and setting of the Conservation Area. The Appraisal is informed by the historical development of the town from its birth to what it is today, and is intended to be a management tool and guide for owners, occupiers, the planning authority and other stakeholders in the area. Importantly, the Appraisal also recommends making a number of changes to the boundaries of the Conservation Area to strengthen its role and the character of the area.

The Conservation Area Appraisal is intended to support Girvan's Story, a community-led regeneration project which aims to improve Girvan and address some of the challenges it faces through investment in the historic environment, community heritage activities, and provision of employment and learning opportunities through traditional skills training.

Stage 1 approvals to Historic Environment Scotland's Heritage & Place Programme and The National Lottery Heritage Funds Thriving Places Scheme were confirmed in May 23, providing funding for a project officer to develop a full detailed application including an appraisal and management plan of the conservation area, detailed repair schemes for a number of priority projects including a small grants scheme, and the delivery of a number of pilot activities to engage with the local community and build capacity.

The Planning Authority is seeking your views on Girvan Conservation Area as it presently exists, and on the proposed boundary changes identified in the draft Appraisal. The questionnaire can be accessed below:

In addition, a public drop-in engagement event on the Conservation Area Appraisal and Girvan's Story is being held on 27th April 2024 between 12pm and 3pm at Sacred Heart Hall, Henrietta Street, Girvan. Planning officers will be present to answer any questions and receive any feedback or comments on the draft Appraisal.
