South Ayrshire Schools to Compete in LitterLotto League Challenge

LitterLotto Schools League

School pupils in South Ayrshire will soon be able to compete with others in the area to win prizes using the behaviour change app, LitterLotto.

As part of a wider partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful and LitterLotto, South Ayrshire Council have launched an innovative LitterLotto League competition in schools to encourage pupils to bin their waste.

South Ayrshire Council are working alongside Aberdeen, Fife and Glasgow as one of four councils launching the pilot over the next 12 months.

LitterLotto is already available to anyone in South Ayrshire following its launch in March last year. It is a free to enter prize draw that aims to help reduce litter through behavioural change, incentivising people to bin their litter responsibly.

To be in with a chance of winning, all you need to do is download the free LitterLotto app on your smartphone or device, and when you're out and about use the app to take a picture of you placing your litter in the bin.  Each time you submit a new photo, you'll have another opportunity to win a prize.

South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Buildings, Housing and Environment, Councillor Martin Kilbride said: "LitterLotto is a fantastic initiative and I'm delighted that we're introducing the league in schools to help tackle the litter emergency.

We were the first council in Scotland to join forces with Keep Scotland Beautiful and LitterLotto last year, and now we're also one of the first councils to bring in the school league. This demonstrates our commitment to improving our environment and promoting behaviour change across the authority."

Barry Fisher, Chief Executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: "We're so excited to be launching this new initiative as we work to address Scotland's litter emergency.

Through our wide variety of educational activities - as well as our Litter League as part of #SpringCleanScotland 2024 - we know just how passionate young people are about tackling litter and this fantastic campaign offers some wonderful prizes to those who come out on top.

"Our partnership with LitterLotto has had a great impact so far and I'm delighted we're expanding this partnership and collaborating with these four councils to further incentivise young people to look after our environment."

David Landsberg, Founder and CEO of Peasy and LitterLotto, said: "If you had told me when we launched LitterLotto that in just 18 months we'd have given away hundreds of thousands of pounds in prizes and seen over 12 million pieces of litter binned through our app, I would have been blown away.

It's thanks to our fantastic partners like Keep Scotland Beautiful, partnering councils and the great work of their communities that we're achieving such impressive results."
