South Ayrshire schools compete in heats for annual Euroquiz competition

More than 100 Primary 6 pupils took part in the South Ayrshire heats for the annual Euroquiz competition.

The team from Glenburn Primary School were the overall winners of the heats which took place on Tuesday 26 March. They will go on to compete against schools from each of the other Scottish local authorities in the finals held in Edinburgh this June.

Alloway Primary School were the runners up in the exciting competition.

The Euroquiz competition has been running since 1993 and is organised by The Scottish European Educational Trust. Pupils compete in four rounds, testing their knowledge of geography and history, languages, European affairs, and general knowledge.

The competition encourages pupils to work collaboratively and emphasises the importance of learning about other languages and cultures.

S6 Language Ambassadors from Prestwick Academy and Marr College came along on the day to assist with the running of the competition. The quiz was hosted by Mark Pentleton, founder of Coffee Break Languages.

Councillor Stephen Ferry, South Ayrshire Council's portfolio holder for Education said: "It's wonderful that schools across South Ayrshire have been given the opportunity to take part in this long-running competition that promotes inter-disciplinary learning. Studying modern languages has so many benefits, and its impressive to see pupils immersed in learning about other cultures at primary school.
