South Ayrshire Beaches Retain Scotland's Beach Award

NEWS UPDATED

Six beaches in South Ayrshire have retained the prestigious Scotland's Beach Award from environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful.

For another year, all beaches maintained by South Ayrshire Council have been awarded, with Ayr, Girvan, Maidens, Prestwick, Troon and Barassie meeting the key criteria set by Keep Scotland Beautiful, with a focus on amenities, biodiversity and cleanliness.

The award recognises the fantastic beaches across Scotland and encourages improvements, where necessary, to improve the economic and aesthetic value of the coastline, to ensure communities and visitors alike can enjoy these invaluable spaces. The award is the only national benchmark for local environmental quality celebrating clean, well-managed and sustainable beaches.

South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Buildings, Housing and Environment, Councillor Martin Kilbride, said: "It's a fantastic achievement that all six of our beaches have once again received this award. Our coastline is one of our most important, yet, vulnerable assets and it's crucial that we continue to protect our beaches for present and future generations.

"These awards do not come on their own, so I'd like to once again thank our teams, community groups and individuals who work tirelessly throughout the year to help us achieve this."

South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs, Councillor Alec Clark, said: "I'm delighted that all areas of our coastline have been recognised by Keep Scotland Beautiful once again.

"It's important that our beaches are maintained to a high standard, as they are well used by both residents and visitors 365 days of the year. South Ayrshire is renowned for its coastline and we're incredibly lucky to have six beautiful stretches of sandy beaches which are also a haven for biodiversity.

"The partnership working of our teams, community groups and individuals has not gone unnoticed, and I would like to extend my thanks to everyone involved. Our beaches are ready for the summer, so let's hope we get the weather!"
