Council Unveils Upgraded Tennis Courts in Girvan

Girvan Tennis Courts May 2025

Residents and visitors can now enjoy upgraded tennis facilities in Girvan, thanks to a £30,000 funding boost from the UK Government and Lawn Tennis Association's (LTA) Tennis Foundation Park Tennis Project.

The investment has transformed the courts with improved surfaces, new drainage, upgraded fencing, new nets and posts, and the installation of gate access smart technology which supports a brand-new online booking system.

The new system and gate access technology, which has been piloted successfully for the past three years at various sites across the country, will allow users to book and pay for the courts in advance to guarantee availability.

The Park Tennis Project has brought over 2,500 park tennis courts that were in poor or unplayable condition back to life for the benefit of communities across the country, providing vital opportunities for children and adults to get active.

We will also work with the LTA to make sure there are opportunities for everyone to pick up a racket and play, with the introduction of free social tennis sessions every weekend through Barclays Free Park Tennis.

The courts are now open for booking, and you can find further information—including details on the upcoming Free Park Tennis sessions—on the LTA website: www.lta.org.uk.

South Ayrshire Council's Depute Leader and Portfolio Holder for Sport and Leisure, Councillor Brian Connolly said: "This funding has been invaluable in helping us revitalise these courts, creating a space where people of all ages can enjoy tennis, stay active and connect with others. The online booking system is a fantastic new addition which will make the courts easily accessible for everyone and will open the sport up to more players."

South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs, Councillor Alec Clark, said: "The upgraded tennis courts enhance the sports facilities available in Girvan, which is excellent for both the local community and encouraging visitors to the area. The project reflects the Council's commitment to promoting active lifestyles and ensuring quality recreational spaces for all, and we would encourage players of all levels to visit the newly refurbished courts and take advantage of the improved facilities."

LTA Chief Executive, Scott Lloyd, said: "We're delighted to see Girvan's park tennis courts officially re-open to the public, and in better shape than ever. This investment from the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come. We will also be working closely with the Council to ensure that the local community has a range of accessible opportunities to get on court, ensuring that we open up our sport to many more people."
