Public engagement sessions on the provision of residential care for older people have been well attended at South Ayrshire's two local authority run care homes. 110 people attended a series of drop-in events in Ayr and Girvan, which allowed families, staff and the wider public to exchange views on the options under consideration.
The South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership – which brings together a wide range of health and social work services – is currently exploring a range of options for both South Lodge in Ayr, and Hillcrest in Girvan, to help fully understand the available care home and wider care package provision in South Ayrshire.
The options being looked at include maintaining services, upgrading facilities, and the availability and potential for alternative care provision.
Drop-in sessions at Hillcrest and South Lodge over the last week were attended by 52 and 58 people respectively. Among the themes discussed by residents, family and staff were: excellent levels of existing care, the close relationship between residents and staff, the importance of respite care for any future model, an acknowledgement of the role that sheltered housing could play in meeting future needs, as well as the importance of social activity for residents.
Councillor Rita Miller, Chair of the South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership Integration Joint Board said the sessions had made an important contribution to the review, "An open invitation was sent to families, staff and the wider public to come down and discuss the options being considered, and the sessions were both well attended.
"The discussion was constructive and the feedback we've had back so far is providing invaluable information that will be considered as part of the review.
"A series of follow-up events will be scheduled for later in the month where we will update the groups we are working with on the progress of the review.
"With a range of options being considered no final decision has been made at this time, and I would urge anyone with an interest in these two care homes to contact the review team as soon as possible."
The review report into local authority care provision for older people in South Ayrshire will be put before the Integrated Joint Board early next year. Should you wish to contribute comments please contact the team directly: firstname.lastname@example.org.
