Bright and welcoming - new corridor is officially opened
South Ayrshire Council has just revealed the new look Southcraig School following a series of improvement works. The school now boasts a new entrance, reception area, staffroom and new office accommodation as well as a functional new corridor which links the two main teaching buildings.
Costing £0.7million, the revamped school building was centre stage as around 150 children and young people took part in a summer fun day along with their families.
There were loads of activities on the day to celebrate the completion of the work including games, music, dancing, beat the goalie and face painting. Adults could relax in a pampering session and there was also a tour of the new facilities which proved popular.
Industrious young people from the school set up an enterprise stall to sell homemade goodies and there was a raffle and tombola stall, helping the school raise £423 to go towards buying outdoor play equipment.
The children and young people really enjoyed the fun day and appreciate their new look school too:
"The summer fun day was great. We all had lots of fun"
"I liked the face painting and football"
"The new corridor is so cool. We can go around the school now and see our friends"
Councillor William Grant, Portfolio Holder for Lifelong Learning for South Ayrshire Council said: "It was great to see so many people having fun and enjoying all the activities — a good time was had by all. This was a celebration, not only of the new look school but for the wider community too.
"The changes to the school have already made a big difference, not only can children and staff now walk in comfort between the two main buildings, there is now one reception instead of two so it's more welcoming and less confusing at the same time.
"Southcraig School now has a single identity and the result is that children, young people and the staff are able to mix more easily which builds cohesion, something most other schools take for granted."
Jane Gordon, Head Teacher at Southcraig School said: "We are all really happy with the improvements and there are no more outside trips when moving around the school. Our new corridor is bright and welcoming and the new staffroom allows everyone to come together which was not possible before.
"The Summer Fun Day was a great success with very positive feedback. It's a lovely way to give something back to our families for all their support over the year and was a good opportunity to let them see all the amazing changes at the school for themselves."
