Sporting fun for Year of Young People

2018 is Scotland's Year of Young People and the Council is keen to celebrate the talents and achievements of young people throughout South Ayrshire.

Fun Feb was a chance for around 300 youngsters to try a host of wintry activities and all for free. Inspired by YOYP and the 2018 PyeonyChang Winter Olympics the young people had great time and discovered some new talents too.

Taking place during the February school break, the young people did not let the lack of snow get in their way as they took part in skiing, ice hockey and curling.

Grace aged 11 she said: "I enjoyed the skiing as I had never done it before. It was a new experience."

Alex aged 17 gave ice hockey a try, he said: "I was great fun and I learned a lot about the sport and realised that it's more difficult than I thought"

Lewis aged 11 was inspired by the Winter Olympics, he said: "
I enjoyed the lesson I learned loads about curling and made friends. I would go back and do it again"

Councillor William Grant, Youth Champion for South Ayrshire Council said: "Fun Feb has been a great success and I'm sure there will be lots more to come as we celebrate our young people's ideas, attitudes and ambitions.

"The activities were not only fun but have helped the young people taking part build confidence and make new friends. Hopefully even more of our youngsters will be inspired to try new activities which contribute towards a healthier lifestyle and who knows, they could be competing in the Winter Olympics in years to come."

"I would like to thank the organisers and all the clubs who took part to make Fun Feb a success."

Jessica Hartshorn, Chair of South Ayrshire Youth Forum ( SAYF) said: "Fun Feb was an amazing experience for all young people involved, through all the events young people were amazed at the opportunities in their communities that they have never had before.

I would urge anyone to replicate the events we had during February as it boosts young people relations with youth work staff and youth forum members, it also makes them more willing to participate in later activities that we facilitate"

This event was delivered and supported by the following Council services Community Learning and Development, Active Schools and Sports and Leisure.
