Another classic competition at Girvan
The winners of this year's Girvan Golf Classic have just been announced. More than one hundred amateur golfers took part in the prestigious competition, which is our first golf tournament of the year.
The 31st Girvan Golf Classic took place over three days, and was hotly contested by amateur male golfers.
This year, those taking part competed for a number of prizes including the 'Maggie Milligan Trophy'. This new trophy commemorates Maggie who passed away last year. Along with her husband Stan, Maggie ran the 19th Hole, lounge bar at the course for over 25 years.
The winner of the handicap (0-13) Ailsa Trophy was Jamie Galloway of Girvan Golf Club with a score of 188. Jon MacLean of Bearsden Golf Club was runner-up, with a score of 194.
The winner of the handicap (14-28) Maggie Milligan Trophy was Ian Muir of Loudoun Golf Club with a score of 195. Glen Ashton of Leigh Golf Club was runner-up, with a score of 196.
The winner of the scratch competition and the Carrick Herald Quaich was Steven Stamper of Turnberry Golf Club with a score of 197. Steven Wallace of Prestwick St Cuthbert Golf Club was runner-up, with a score of 202.
Councillor Siobhian Brown, Economy and Culture Portfolio Holder for the Council said: "I am so glad the Girvan Golf Classic was able to take place again this year. This competition always attracts some of the best amateur golfers around, and 2020 was no different.
"There was also a good turnout of talented young golfers competing this year. This is really encouraging as we look to introduce more beginners to the game. Despite the pandemic, our golf memberships are up, and we continue to ensure all of our courses operate safely.
"Well done to all the winners and everyone who took part, I would also like to thank the organisers for ensuring the competition ran smoothly and safely."
Girvan Golf Classic is open to amateur male golfers who are members of a recognised golf club and holders of a senior handicap.
