Coronavirus (COVID-19) - Care Homes in South Ayrshire

 16 April 2020  |

South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership (SAHSCP) is working alongside NHS Ayrshire & Arran's Health Protection Team to support care homes through the COVID-19 pandemic.

There have been a number of confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in care homes in South Ayrshire and sadly some residents have died. Our thoughts are with their families and friends at this very difficult time.

We would like to reassure care home residents and their families that every measure is being taken to protect residents and staff and to prevent the spread of the virus.

South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership are maintaining good relationships and lines of communication with care home providers in the area, and we work in strong partnership in these challenging circumstances.

As soon as there is a suspected COVID-19 case in a care home, our NHS Health Protection team is informed and appropriate testing and infection control measures take place.

We have dedicated, daily contact with all care homes in South Ayrshire, offering clinical support, infection control support and access to workforce advice.

Much of this work is done by our invaluable district nursing teams, with support from aligned GP practices and the wider Health and Social Care Partnership.

Care homes provide a vital service and we will continue to support them through these challenging times.

Councillor Brian McGinley, Chair of the South Ayrshire Integration Joint Board said: "As Chair of South Ayrshire IJB, I am standing in solidarity with all of those who are suffering from effects of the coronavirus at this time.

"I would like to extend my deepest sympathises to those who have lost loved ones.

"I wish to express my sincere gratitude to all the carers on the frontline for their dedication and commitment to helping those most in need.

"I am heartened to learn from public health that our care homes have developed a very positive approach to infection control and protecting our vulnerable residents."

Councillor Julie Dettbarn, Adult Heath and Social Care Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families of those who have sadly died.

"The coronavirus is hitting every part of society and we are doing everything we can to protect the vulnerable. Care homes are being supported, and I would like to recognise care home staff, who are going above and beyond under very challenging circumstances.
