Prestwick and Villages decision day
Hundreds of people have turned out to give their backing to 25 community groups in Prestwick and the surrounding area. Almost 500 people took part in the latest Prestwick and Villages decision day where people dropped in to vote on their favourite local projects.
Among the successful projects: helping to light-up Prestwick this Christmas, enabling Symington Primary to celebrate its 50th anniversary through their first ever musical, increased access to Prestwick North Beach through a community regeneration project, and helping Monkton Senior Citizens get fit through exercise.
The Prestwick and Villages locality planning group event took place on Saturday, 10 March at Prestwick Academy. It was part of a drive to get people actively involved in local decision making known as 'Participatory Budgeting'.
More than £57,000 was available at the event, with grants available from between £500 and £5,000. Voting was open to anyone who lived, worked, volunteered or studied in Newton North, Heathfield, Prestwick, Monkton and Symington, aged 10+.
Councillor Douglas Campbell, Leader of South Ayrshire Council said the event had been a great success, "People turned out in large numbers to hear more about groups in their own community and voted to support the ones which struck a personal chord.
"The opportunity to network with like-minded people is an added bonus for the decision day events, something which offers a chance to build networks and potentially find new partners for future projects.
"The events involve a lot of organisation and I'd like to thank everyone working behind the scenes for making the day such a success; and my congratulations to every successful group, all of which will now be working hard to deliver their projects."
