Hangmen - The Compass
Where: The Gaiety, Carrick Street, Ayr KA7 1NU
When: Thursday 02 April 2020 at View all dates
The Compass are thrilled to perform this multi-award winning black comedy, directed by Christine Stanley. Written by Award winner Martin McDonagh (Best Writer and Director for 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri), it marked the playwright's return to the stage winning him an Olivier Award and a New York Circle Award for Best New Play.
In his small pub in the northern English town of Oldham, Harry is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they have abolished hanging? Among the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry's reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd and the peculiar Mooney lurk with very different motives for their visit.
"The most line-by-line funny play London has seen in years." The Daily Telegraph
"You might want to think twice before declaring that this play about the last public hangmen in Britain is "drop-dead hilarious" or "perfectly executed" but that's a pretty exact description of the blackly comic brilliance of McDonagh's writing" – The Independent
