Activity for Health South Ayrshire


Activity for Health South Ayrshire is our local physical activity on referral programme throughout South Ayrshire. You can be referred to the programme by your GP or health professional and we will support you to become more active with activities and physical activity that are fun and enjoyable. Whether you are recovering from a heart attack or stroke, have a lifelong condition or simply need additional support to lose weight we have activities and classes suitable for everyone.Working in conjunction with NHS colleagues, the scheme assists people to become more active and promotes the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Who is the scheme aimed at?

If you have health issues that could be improved through regular physical activity, such as:

  • Sedentary lifestyle (inactive)
  • Obese/overweight
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Musculo/skeletal disorders (e.g. arthritis, osteoporosis, back pain)
  • Heart conditions
  • Lung conditions
  • Stroke / TIA (must be ambulant)
  • Cancer
  • Anxiety/depression/stress/low self esteem
  • Diabetes

Exclusion Criteria - Patients with the following conditions are not suitable to participate in our programme

  • Unstable angina
  • Uncontrolled resting blood pressure
  • Significant drop in blood pressure during exercise
  • Tachycardia >100bpm
  • Unstable or acute heart failure
  • Uncontrolled acute sytemic ilness
  • Unable to manintain seated upright position
  • Recent injury through fall without attention
  • Impared cognition such that the patient is unable to follow instructions
  • Place others and themselves at risk

How do I become involved in the scheme?

Contact your local health professional - GP, Practice Nurse, Physiotherapist, Cardiac Nurse, Dietician, Occupational Health Nurse, Health Visitor, Nurse Specialist, Community Pharmacist (local chemist) or Mental Health Team and ask about the scheme.

How much does it cost to join the scheme?

Monthly membership

£20 access to off peak gym and swimming at all of our facilities. 

Pay as you Go

Each activity is £3.50 per attendance for the first 12 months, normal rates apply following this period.

What happens when I join the scheme?

A member of the Health Development Team will arrange an appointment for you to come and have a relaxed, informal chat about your activity levels and life style.

We will also have a chat about what type of activities might be suitable for you e.g. Specialised Classes, Aqua Fit, Keep Fit for Beginners, Pilates, Swimming, Gentle Movement, Walking, home based exercise or one of our many other activities.

We will keep in contact with you throughout your membership to provide you with assistance, advice and support.
