Council Tax Reduction Scheme

A new Council Tax Reduction scheme will be introduced by the Scottish Government from 1 April 2013, replacing the current system of Council Tax Benefit.

The Council Tax Reduction scheme will be administered by Benefit Services.

Funding for the new scheme has been set at 90% of the current level. However, following agreement from all 32 Scottish Councils to fund the 10% gap for 2013/14, in practice, there will be little change in the first year, and various discounts – including the single person’s discount – will still apply.

How will this affect me?

If you are in receipt of Council Tax Benefit as at 31 March 2013, you will automatically receive the Council Tax Reduction from 1 April 2013. The amount of the Council Tax Reduction will be shown on your Council Tax bill.

How do new claimants apply for Council Tax Reduction?

If you wish to apply for Council Tax Reduction from 1 April 2013, contact Benefit Services in the first instance.
