Lottery Tickets and Scratchcards

  • It is an offence to sell lottery tickets to someone under 16.
  • It is an offence to sell scratch cards to someone under 16.
  • If you are not sure that the customer is over the age of 16 and they appear to be within a few years of this age, ask for proof of age.
  • If you are still not sure refuse the sale.
  • If you sell lottery or scratch cards to someone under 16 you may be fined up to £5000 and/or serve two years imprisonment.
  • It is illegal for members of staff under 16 to sell lottery tickets or scratch cards.

Facts

  • Many regard lotteries as a relatively benign form of gambling. However, 31 percent of callers to a national gambling hotline indicated problems with lottery and scratchcard gambling.
