Long stretches of sandy beach, superb sports and recreational
facilities and family entertainment have helped make Ayr one of Britain's
premier coastal resorts.
This famous County Town offers excellent shopping facilities in its award winning town centre which hosts branches of the main multiple stores alongside a wide range of interesting individually owned shops.
For those who wish to enjoy sport from a spectator's point of view, one of the main features of the town is Ayr Racecourse, Scotland's top horse racing centre which offers more racing days than any other Scottish course.
Energetic visitors however can choose from a range of outdoor sports including tennis, bowling and golf, whilst the town's Citadel Leisure Centre, situated at Ayr Harbour, is a first class venue for indoor activities including swimming and keep fit. Also indoors there is Ten Pin Bowling at LA Bowl. It is also possible to take sea angling trips from the port. During the summer months the world's last sea-going paddle steamer PS Waverley sails on a variety of half and full day cruises on the Firth of Clyde.
A stroll around one of the town's beautifully kept parks and gardens which include Belleisle, Rozelle and Craigie, provides a more leisurely experience.
Visitors to Ayr can also enjoy a full range of entertainment at the town's theatres, the "Gaiety", "Civic" and "Borderline", in addition to all the latest films on offer at the multi-screen cinema and the many other facilities which ensure a full and varied choice of nightlife for visitors to the town. Carnegie Library and Cyber Centre also offers visitors the opportunity to access information through modern technology.
A main attraction of the area situated to the south of Ayr is Haven Holiday Park (formerly Craig Tara), with its full range of holiday facilities for families of all ages.
Scotland's National Bard, Robert Burns, was born in Alloway, on the southern outskirst of the town. A visit to the Burns National Heritage Park is a must to see the poet's birthplace, Burns Cottage, and the Tam O' Shanter Experience, with its audio visual film on the life of Burns and its memorable portrayal of his famous poem "Tam O'Shanter". Also Burns Monument, Brig O'Doon and Alloway Kirk
