Free school meals


Pre-school children aged 2-5

Applications for free school meals for pre-school children aged 2 to 5 will be accepted from parents/ carers who meet the eligibility criteria and whose child attends a local authority or partnership centre providing early learning and childcare for more than 4 hours a day and over the lunchtime period.

Application forms are also available from your child's nursery.

Qualifying criteria for pre-school children aged 2 - 5

Child Tax Credit only where household income is less than £16,105 Letter of Award 2017/18 (all pages required)
Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit where household income is less than £6420 Letter of Award 2017/18 (all pages required)
Universal Credit where earned income is £610 or less per month
Some application forms have been issued indicating applicants would be entitled where Universal Credit earned income is £500 or less per month. This value has now been increased to £610 or less per month.

Primary and Secondary school children

All school children in Primary 1, 2, and 3 are entitled to free school meals which is to the value of £2.10 per day. The cost for a secondary school meal is £2.20.

Other pupils may be entitled to free school meals if they meet the qualifying criteria.

Free school meals application forms

An application for free school meals does not require to be submitted for P1 - P3 pupils but will be required for a Clothing Grant.
