School Meals in South Ayrshire

The Scottish Government has recently set up an expert panel on school meals. This panel has drawn up the “HUNGRY FOR SUCCESS” document - detailing recommendations and guidelines that ensure children will receive a nutritious, healthy, well-balanced school meal.

South Ayrshire Council in partnership with NHS Ayrshire and Arran are providing free fruit, twice per week, to all local authority nursery children. This commenced at the end of September 2005 and will continue until the funding stops.

Free fruit 3 times per week to all children in Primary 1 and Primary 2.

More fruit and vegetables are available

Portion sizes have been increased.

Free bread is available for all pupils taking a school lunch.

Carbonated drinks are not available in Primary, Special and Secondary schools – a wide range of fruit juices and waters are now in place.

Chips are only available once per week in primary Schools and twice per week in Secondary Schools.

Cashless Catering Systems (where pupils use a swipe card) are operational in all Secondary Schools.

In Primary and Special schools, new menus have been designed which have been nutritionally analysed to ensure that they provide the correct amount of nutrients - which are essential for a healthy diet. Catering Services are in the process of designing menus for Secondary schools.

Secondary Schools - from Monday 7th November 2005 all portion sizes will reflect those stated in the Hungry for Success document.

All schools - crisps and confectionery have been removed from the service counter at lunch-time.

The current price of a two-course meal is £1.65
