South Ayrshire Council
School Estate - Planning for Improvement
The Fundamental Review of the School Estate has been a success for South Ayrshire Council. Communities and stakeholders were given the opportunity to engage with the Council to shape the future of the school estate and develop a strategy for modernisation. The outcome of the review process was reported to and approved by the Council in June 2009 and a number of successful projects have already been celebrated. The new schools at Belmont Academy, Prestwick Academy, Alloway Primary, Barassie Primary, Monkton Primary and the new Annexe at Kyle Academy have raised the standard of schools to a new level and offers opportunities for staff to develop the educational experiences of our young people in new and exciting ways. These new schools offer enhanced community facilities with the provision of Lifelong Learning Suites and state of the art sports facilities including all-weather pitches at Belmont Academy and Prestwick Academy.
In addition to this, the existing primary schools at Dalmilling and Muirhead have been completely refurbished to an exceptionally high standard. These newly refurbished schools provide our young people with an enjoyable learning environment in accommodation that is fit for purpose. The modernisation programme continues with refurbishments and extensions underway at Forehill Primary, St Cuthbert’s Primary and Symington Primary. 2010 will see the refurbishment of Braehead Primary and an extension at Heathfield Primary that will provide new dining/sports and ICT facilities.
Building work will get underway in January 2010 at the new Colmonell Primary School and will be completed by December 2010. This project has been developed in conjunction with the school, parents, pupils and the wider community which not only demonstrates the Council’s commitment to rural schools but also a commitment to genuinely engage and involve the community.
The Council has now clearly set out its aspirations for the school estate and these aspirations are now becoming a reality. Development of the improvement strategy will continue in conjunction with the Council’s wider Asset Management Plan to ensure that a coordinated approach is taken to Asset Management within South Ayrshire.
