School Meals & Free Fruit

Free Fruit in Schools - PosterAs part of our healthy eating programme all children in Primary 1 and Primary 2 will be offered free fruit 3 times a week.

Targeting the youngest children where eating fruit is most likely to be habit forming will be more likely to bring the greatest health gain in the long term.

There are clearly established links between health and educational achievement – children who are poorly nourished are less likely to fulfil their educational potential. The provision of fresh fruit helps to improve children’s physical well being and discourage them from snacking on high fat, high sugar or salt alternatives. Improving the up-take of school meals and fresh fruit is an essential part of supporting children.

Children of parents in receipt of income support are entitled to a free meal. Information and application forms for free school meals may be obtained from schools, libraries, area offices and from Education, Culture and Life-long Learning, County Buildings, Ayr.
