Accessibility Strategy

In order to advance our action plan the Accessibility Strategy Group is keen to consult with parents/carers, children and young people, and staff.

We would be very grateful if you could complete this questionnaire to help us to take forward our plans for implementing the Disability Equality Duty. Each questionnaire has a freepost address.

The Disability Discrimination Act (2005) requires education authorities to produce a Disability Equality Scheme. Education, Culture and Lifelong Learning has produced a disability Equality Duty Action Plan stating the department's commitment to fulfil the requirements of the Duty through the following processes:

Promoting equality of opportunity between disabled persons and other persons
Eliminating discrimination that is unlawful under the Disability Discrimination Act
Eliminating harassment of disabled persons that is related to their disabilities
Promoting positive attitudes towards disabled people
Encouraging participation by disabled persons in public life
Taking steps to take account of disabled persons' disabilities, even where that involves treating disabled persons more favourably than other persons

The three main strands of the Accessibility Strategy

Access to the curriculum
Improving communication of school information
Improving access to the physical environment

These are seen as central features in taking forward the promotion of the Disability Equality Duty.
