Community Safety Partnership

T.A.Y.P (Targeted approach to Young People)

Partnership
N.H.S, Strathclyde Police, Community Safety South Ayrshire Council, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue

Group Targeted
Young people at risk of, or involved, in substance misuse

Community Safety Partnership Priority
To promote a targeted approach to drugs issues, including targeted provision for groups identified through the problem solving process (this will still include a consistent approach to drugs education albeit on a targeted basis).

Approach
Delivery of social and environmental education in a wild, rural, yet relaxed environment.

Methodology
Use of Outdoor activities as diversionary/education measures

Agencies Involved
A.C.E (Adventure Centre for Education) Girvan, M.B.A (Mountain Bothies Association), Community Support Officers, Target Leisure, Throughcare and Ayr College Multi Media Dept.

Evaluation Process
Video/DVD and Questionnaire format

Evaluation Impact
The project involves a total of 36 young people from 4 referring agencies over 6 phases. Each individual engages in a 1 to 1 questionnaire (due to literacy levels) on substance misuse, with their support workers. This is filled in but remains anonymous in the evaluation. “Big Brother” style individual interviews are also carried out by the activity instructors, away from the group. A D.V.D will be produced as a promotional/evaluation tool. Evaluation will be more focused on the individual and their personal development.
Criticism
To be delivered on completion (March 2008)

Potential
Further development into 16-25 yr old age group. Possibility of developing survival skills and elongating the programme.
