Community Safety Partnership Priority
Building a Safe, Healthy, Confident South Ayrshire. Focussing on prevention and early intervention with regard to the Anti-social Behaviour strategy.
Aims
To encourage young people to become involved in outdoor sports/games activities in ‘hot-spot’ areas within South Ayrshire, identified through complaints to ASB and Police regarding youth disorder.
Approach
Delivery of sports/games activities every evening and during holidays by community coaches and ‘streetworkers’ employed through Community Education. The project was funded through the ASB budget, and supplementary funding was provided through Education, Culture and Lifelong Learning.
Methodology
Use of sports/games activities to engage young people, diverting them from involvement in antisocial behaviour, and encouraging them to access relevent diversionary activities.

Evaluation
Process
Ongoing feedback from young people, together with number of complaints received by police and antiscial behaviour team regarding youth disorder in targetted areas.
Evaluation Impact
A full evaluation has still to be completed as the phase two of the project ended last week. Over 1,000 young people took part in the scheme during the school summer holidays, and general feedback from young people has been positive. Initial findings during the Easter programme were that calls regarding youth disorder in targetted areas decreased during the time that the programme was running.
Potential
It is hoped to continue to deliver the scheme next year, and during the winter months to encourage young people to access other activities, and use other resources such as the Stagecoach Youth Express bus.
