Roads and Transportation

A77 AND A78 TRUNK ROADS

Safe, Secure and Healthy communities are at the heart of South Ayrshire Council’s aspirations. The Council is committed to building communities where residents and visitors can safely travel through without incident. Not only does the Council’s Development, Safety & Regulation department manage and maintain the road network in a safe condition it offers advice to travellers on how to use the roads safely.

Within Roads and Transportation the Road Safety Office provides education, training and publicity advice on all aspects of road user behaviour.

The Road Safety Office focuses its work on casualty reduction and crash prevention. It targets engineering improvements to locations or routes where injury crashes are the most frequent and education measures to those groups of road users most likely to be involved in crashes. The consequences of a road crash can have a devastating impact on the lives of casualties’ and their families. They also generate significant resource implications for the emergency services and hospitals. Much of the work carried out by the Road Safety Office is therefore this prioritised to reduce casualties. The Council’s road safety targets for 2010 are to:

  1. Reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) by 40%,
  2. Reduce the number of children killed or seriously injured by 50%
  3. Reduce the number of slightly injured casualties by 10%.

These targets are based on the 1994-98 average totals and the table below shows the casualty numbers for each target.
