Road Improvements in South Ayrshire

Troon - Click to View a Larger ImageThe Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, states that “.. a local roads authority shall manage and maintain all such roads in their area as are for the time being entered in a list (in this act referred to as their “list of public roads”) prepared and kept by them under this section..”

South Ayrshire Council is the roads authority for those roads contained in the list within South Ayrshire.
The list of public roads, and the policies for maintaining the list are contained in the List of Public Roads within South Ayrshire. The list is open for inspection by the public at Burns House.

South Ayrshire Council, as the roads authority for those roads contained in the list, has a number of responsibilities and functions and policies are in place for each of: -

  • Road development control
  • Road improvement and new construction
  • Road maintenance
  • Maintenance of bridges and structures
  • Installation and maintenance of road lighting
  • Management of utilities
  • Public rights of way management
  • Liaison with Environmental Health
  • Liaison with adjacent roads authorities
  • Liaison with street cleansing

With regards to road improvements, a list of possible improvements is maintained. An appraisal is carried out each year of the schemes on the list to assist in compiling the Roads Capital Programme.

Suggestions for additions to the list are welcomed.
