The
Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, states that “.. a local roads
authority shall manage and maintain all such roads in their
area as are for the time being entered in a list (in this act
referred to as their “list of public roads”) prepared
and kept by them under this section..”
South Ayrshire Council is the roads authority for those roads
contained in the list within South Ayrshire.
The list of public roads, and the policies for maintaining
the list are contained in the List of Public Roads within South
Ayrshire. The list is open for inspection by the public at
Burns House.
South Ayrshire Council, as the roads authority for those roads
contained in the list, has a number of responsibilities and
functions and policies are in place for each of: -
Network
management
- Road development control
- Road improvement and new construction
- Road maintenance
- Maintenance of bridges and structures
- Installation and maintenance of road lighting
- Management of utilities
- Public rights of way management
- Liaison with Environmental Health
- Liaison with adjacent roads authorities
- Liaison with street cleansing
With regards to road improvements, a list of possible improvements
is maintained. An appraisal is carried out each year of the
schemes on the list to assist in compiling the Roads Capital
Programme.
