A77 Whitletts Roundabout - Work ends on £3.5m Ayrshire upgrade – Sunday 10th September 2006

A £3.5m scheme to relieve congestion and improve traffic flow at Whitletts Roundabout on the A77 in Ayrshire has been completed on time.

Worthwhile improvement works have now been delivered at the roundabout, which carries 33,000 vehicles a day and provides links to Stranraer, Prestwick and Ayr communities.

Transport Scotland and its agents South Ayrshire Council, thanked drivers for their patience while work was carried out.

Cathy Jamieson, Minister for Justice, said: “Local drivers, commuters and visitors alike will be pleased to know that Whitletts has benefited from a £3.5m upgrade. I welcome completion of these works that have been delivered on time and I want to thank the travelling public for their patience while improvements have been ongoing.

“This key part of the A77 will now be able to cope with more vehicles thanks to increased capacity and will have a better traffic flow thanks to the installation of traffic signals. For some time, this roundabout has suffered from heavy congestion that has had an impact on the daily lives of local people and businesses. I am delighted that the improvement works, which will bring significant benefits to Ayrshire are now complete.”

Leader of South Ayrshire Council, Councillor Gibson T. Macdonald, said: “I am delighted that work has been successfully completed.  I am sure the result will be real benefits to users of the A77, especially drivers heading for Ayr. Hopefully the improvements will cut congestion, and assist the movement of traffic to and from Ayr Town Centre and Prestwick Airport.

“It is also hoped the effort and finance that has been put into the scheme boosts the Ayrshire economy. I would like to emphasize how impressed we have been with the contractors who have done a superb job and kept traffic flowing.”

Work was delivered by contractor RJ McLeod Limited and supervised and designed by South Ayrshire Council as agents on behalf of Transport Scotland.
