A77 Turnberry Climbing Lane and Southern Gateway

Client : Scottish Executive
Consulting Engineers : South Ayrshire Council / Scott Wilson
Contractor : Raynesway Construction / Fairhurst: £1.9m
Duration: 13 weeks

A77 Turnberry Climbing Lane and Southern Gateway works are now complete.

The works comprised the upgrading of a 1.5km length of the trunk road to provide a climbing lane in the northbound carriageway and the provision of right turn lanes. A lay-by, using the original, but now redundant carriageway, has now been formed incorporating a picnic area with scenic views over the Firth of Clyde.

The carriageway was realigned and widened to improve visibility, and a gateway feature at the south end of the village, comprising the minor widening ofr the carriageway and the formation of a footway and verge on the west side of the trunk road was provided.

The A77 is one of the main ferry routes to the ferry port of Stranraer therefore traffic
management was a key element of this project. The contract was carried out
under lane rental conditions in the summer of 2004 and took approximately 13 weeks to complete.

This new overtaking lane at Turnberry is a welcome improvement, will assist in tackling congestion and make travelling easier and safer for drivers using this route.
