South Ayrshire Council was commissioned by the Scottish Executive Development Department to develop a Route Action Plan for the section of the A77 extending from Stranraer to Ayr.
A Route Action Plan is developed by identifying operational problems relating to accident statistics, traffic volumes and road alignment and using the information to bring forward a strategy to improve the overall route.
To date, low-cost accident reduction measures such as improved signage, chevrons and verge marker posts at specific bends have been introduced on the rural sections of the route. In addition, traffic management schemes have been completed in Minishant, Girvan, Cairnryan, Kirkoswald, Lendalfoot, Ballantrae, Maybole and Stranraer.
More recently, South Ayrshire Council was commissioned to respond to requests from Ballantrae Community Council to supplement the existing traffic calming measures.
Traffic calming measures, were investigated, developed where possible and presented to the community for comments. However, the proposals could not be applied without the loss of a significant amount of on road parking.
Taking cognisance of feedback from public consultation, the following actions were agreed and carried out.
1) The wall at Community Centre was knocked down and rebuilt on new alignment and the footpath was reinstated.
2) The centreline on A77 at Shore Road was realigned by Amey Infrastructure Services after resurfacing.
3) the nib at Shore Road was repainted to make it more visible.
In addition to the above, taking account of feedback from complaints, South Ayrshire Council introduced 20mph signing with speed humps on Shore Road, The Vennal and Foreland. The conflict with cars turning into Shore Road is presently being monitored and dealt with by South Ayrshire Council
