Public Performance Reporting

Roads

River Ayr
  • We maintain all public roads, bridges, footways, verges, streetlights and traffic lights in South Ayrshire, except for the A77 and A78 trunk roads, which Amey Highways maintains for the Scottish Government.
  • Last year we inspected around 1,750km of public roads and footways. The Scottish Road Maintenance condition survey in 2009 found that 42.8% of our road network requires maintenance. A new defect categorisation policy was introduced together with a risk matrix in 2011 to assess defects and timescales for their repair. We now use new technology for permanent first time pothole repairs. A number of road shows to explain the new approach will be held across South Ayrshire in January. Please contact Kenny Dalrymple on 01292 616281 for further information.
  • We inspect and maintain 335 bridges and 19,000 streetlights. Of the 235 road bridges which qualify for the Bridge Assessment Programme, last year 93% met the 40 tonne European requirement and we repaired 91% of streetlight faults within 7 days.
  • During the winter of 2009/10, we used 8,800 tonnes of salt and grit on the carriageways and footways with staff working around the clock. This figure is almost double the total amount of salt used in 2007/08 and 2,000 tonnes more than 2008/09.
  • In 2011, we won the Cycling Improvements Award at the prestigious Scottish Transport Awards. The benefits of this work include an increase in the number of people cycling in South Ayrshire due to upgrades in cycle lanes; installation of cycling shelters at various locations; and a reduction in the number of injuries and accidents involving cyclists.
