Registration, Bereavement and Archives

Arran
  • Registration Services for births, marriages and deaths are provided through two offices, one within Ayr Town Hall and the other within the Customer Contact Centre at 17-19 Knockcushan Street, Girvan.
  • During 2008, the service helped people register a total of 1,097 Births and 1,431 deaths. We also registered 385 religious marriages, 373 civil marriages and 7 civil partnerships. We pride ourselves on the standard of service we provide, our staff achieving the lowest percentage error rate of all 32 councils across Scotland.
  • The Bereavement Service has improved the quality and clarity of information it provides, by renewing its management rules for cemeteries. It has put them into a more readily understood format that has been awarded the Plain English Campaign’s ‘Crystal Mark’ award for clarity.
  • During 2008, 1306 cremations were performed at Masonhill Crematorium and 443 burials were carried out at cemeteries across South Ayrshire. A feedback questionnaire has been introduced seeking the views of the bereaved, to ensure that we are providing the best possible service at this emotionally difficult time.
  • The Archive Service has recently relocated to the Watson Peat Building at the Scottish Agricultural College at Auchincruive. This required the careful transfer of over 5.5 Kilometres of records including maps, photographs, bound volumes and loose files, totalling over 30,000 boxes. During this time the staff were still able to deal with 1196 historical enquiries made by email or through the post.
  • The Archive Centre has now fully reopened and details of opening times can be found on the Archives web site shown below.
