Energy Efficiency and Conservation

Lendalfoot
  • Our carbon footprint (the impact that the Council’s services have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases we produce, measured in units of carbon dioxide) amounted to 52,500 tonnes in 2008/9. This takes into account our emissions from energy use in buildings, waste, vehicles and street lighting, and was 2% less than in 2005/6.
  • We are working towards a target of reducing our carbon emissions by 20% by 2013 compared to the 2005/6 levels. Currently the areas of energy and travel are on target to meet their respective targets. However, emissions from waste to landfill have increased slightly (3%) and street lighting has continued its long term trend of increased emissions (5%).
  • Over £6 million has been invested in our properties on measures to assist in reducing our carbon emissions in the last four years. We are continuing to work towards our targets by:
  • Installing more efficient heating and lighting systems and controls
  • Investment in renewable energy projects such as wind turbines, solar power and heat pumps in schools and housing developments
  • Development of alternative travel options for staff to reduce the need to use private transport and encourage cycling, walking and car sharing
  • Partnership working with energy companies to fund improved thermal insulation in homes
  • Householders who want to play their own part in becoming more energy efficient and in using renewable energy can obtain free independent advice by calling the Energy Agency on 0800 512012.
