Grounds and Parks

- We maintain 1,133 hectares of parks, estates and public open spaces, ranging
from estates and woodland, such as Belleisle, Rozelle and Fullarton to small spaces
within residential areas.
- Ayr, Maybole, Girvan, Prestwick and Troon have 22 parks, with a further 7 parks
and recreation grounds in rural parts of South Ayrshire.
- We have 94 play areas, 2 incorporating skating equipment. There are also 5 stand
alone skate parks and 6 multi use games areas. Each facility is inspected for safety
on a weekly basis.
- A two year programme to improve Ayr shorefront play area was completed in July 2009.
A new range of outdoor exercise equipment has been installed, together with an i.Play
electronic action fitness unit. Plans to upgrade the Girvan shorefront play area
are well underway and new equipment will be installed in 2010.
- ‘Friends of’ Groups continue to prosper. The Friends of Newton Park
have secured further external funding to enhance the park and their 2009 Fun Day
was an enormous success.
- Waiting lists for allotments at Craigie and Alloway are still growing as demand
is so high. Craigie Allotment Society have developed a community plot, with a potting
shed, raised beds, a sitting area and a fruit garden, for the benefit of local schools
and community groups.
- Our annual planting programme ensures continuity of tree cover, rejuvenation of
shrubbed and herbaceous areas and helps to improve biodiversity. 2009 saw a complete
transformation of the beds at Place St. Germain in Ayr. Hanging baskets, planters
and abundant flower beds continue to add a welcome splash of colour to our town
centres.
