Library Service

Girvan
  • We serve South Ayrshire through our main library, the Carnegie in Ayr, 13 branch libraries and one mobile library that serves the Carrick area. In 2008/9 we had 808,000 visits to these facilities.
  • The Carnegie is also our principal reference library and the home of the Local History Library and a "Cyber Centre". During last year we have made the Carnegie Library accessible and more attractive to all users by spending £100,000 on electronic doors, new fire and security alarms and painting work. Both the Cyber Centre and the children’s library within Carnegie have been relocated and upgraded enhancing the experience of users.
  • In April 2009 we opened a brand new library in Alloway and re-roofed and redecorated Prestwick Library.
  • During 2009, we reaped the benefits of a two year long programme to upgrade the library systems and modernise the customer service points. In addition more customers are benefitting from the 24-hour, on-line catalogue where they can request books at any time.
  • As well as offering information in book form, many major works of reference are now available in electronic form. All our libraries have "Try IT" facilities offering free internet access and a wide range of software for both learning and leisure.
  • A new on-line resource for people researching their family history is the “ScotlandsPeople” website. This is the official government source of genealogical data for Scotland. Discounted vouchers to pay for services on this website are available from the Carnegie Library. These avoid the need to use a debit or credit card on the website itself.
