Council Properties and Maintenance

Golfing at Prestwick. Photo by John Paul Docherty, Ayr CollegeWe use 626 buildings to deliver our services, ranging from the County Buildings in Ayr, to workers’ bothies on municipal golf courses. In 2006/7, we invested around £7.1 million to improve and upgrade these buildings.

Major projects included a two classroom extension at Muirhead Primary; heating plant renewal at Gardenrose Primary and Queen Margaret Academy; window renewal at eight schools; renewal of heating plant at the Citadel Leisure Centre; and renewal of electrical wiring and plant at Carrick Academy.

In 2006/7 emergency, urgent and planned repairs to these buildings cost over £2.7million, the majority of this being spent on schools, libraries and community centres

We spent around £443,000 altering buildings and improving facilities to make it easier for disabled persons to access services in compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act. Work was carried out at Braehead, St Cuthbert’s and Dailly Primaries, Carrick Academy, Marr College and County Buildings. Overall, this has helped to ensure that 49% of the buildings from which the Council provides its services are accessible to disabled people.

The Council also owns around 8,633 houses. Just over £7.4 million was spent to upgrade them during 2006/7. 100 houses received new heating systems; 593 were rewired and kitchens replaced; 598 had their lofts insulated; 52 re-roughcast and 34 re-roofed.

A position statement on operational assets has recently been produced, to identify the likely future spend that each will require. This will be used to ensure that funding is targeted towards those properties that are in greatest need for delivering Council services.
