Grounds and Parks

Kirkmichael. Photo by Ryan Holland, Ayr CollegeWe maintain 1,133 hectares of parks, estates and public open spaces, ranging from estates and woodland, such as Belleisle, Rozelle and Fullarton to small spaces within residential areas.

Ayr, Maybole, Girvan, Prestwick and Troon have 22 parks, with 7 parks and recreation grounds in rural parts of South Ayrshire.

We have 94 play areas, 2 incorporating skating equipment. There are also 5 stand alone skate parks and 6 multi use games areas. Each facility is inspected for safety on a weekly basis.

As part of our annual refurbishment work, Shaw Park in Symington, Oswald Road and York Street in Ayr were upgraded. Work was also undertaken at Orangefield Drive, The Oval in Prestwick and Newton Park in Ayr, to meet the Disability Discrimination Act. Improvements were also made to Craigie skate park in Ayr.

622 standard trees, 2690 saplings, 1578 shrubs and 2788 herbaceous plants were planted throughout South Ayrshire as part of our annual planned work programme.

We continue to work with Friends of Groups to make park improvements. The Friends of Corsehill Park were delighted to have the listed gate pillars repaired and new ornamental gates and railings erected. They have secured a further £20,000 to undertake more work.

The Friends of Newton Park have seen new benches, picnic tables and bins installed, and have secured funding for 2 sports walls and new notice boards. The local community including the school, Scottish Wildlife Trust, Culzean Rangers, the Council and British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, all worked together to undertake substantial tree, shrub, bulb and wild flower planting.
