Library Service

Greenan Castle. Photo by Claire Maxwell, Ayr CollegeWe serve South Ayrshire through 13 branch libraries and two mobile libraries. Our main library is the Carnegie Library in Ayr. This is also our principal reference library, housing the Scottish and Local History Library, and a "Cyber Centre".

We have 94 play areas, 2 incorporating skating equipment. There are also 5 stand alone skate parks and 6 multi use games areas. Each facility is inspected for safety on a weekly basis.

In addition to offering information in book form, many major works of reference are now available in electronic form. All our libraries have "Try IT" facilities offering free internet access and a wide range of software for both learning and leisure.

Accessing information electronically through our libraries has become increasingly popular, our access points having been used by 9.0% of the people in South Ayrshire in 2006/7, compared to 7.1% the year before.

During 2008, the Library Management System, which we use to issue our books, will be replaced and extended to cover our 8 secondary schools. Our public access computers will be replaced with updated hardware, games machines will be provided in most libraries, and many library interiors will be updated when the old-style issue desks are replaced.

As part of our commitment to the Disability Discrimination Act, we have installed two auto focus electronic magnifiers, to help visually impaired people to view documents, books and newspapers.

The Scottish and Local History Library has a unique collection of books, pamphlets, directories, maps, local newspapers and photographs. It also provides a large range of resources for people seeking information about their family history. To assist, we have added three new microfilm reader/printers, which allow users to access material which otherwise would not be accessible due to its fragility.
