Public Performance Reporting

Roads and Transport

  • We maintain all the public roads, bridges, footways, verges, streetlights and traffic lights in South Ayrshire, except for the A77 and A78 trunk roads, which Amey Highways look after for the Scottish Government.
  • In 2005/06 we inspected around 1,750 km (1,087 miles) of public roads and footways and spent over £2.2M on maintenance. This still left 55% of the road network requiring maintenance treatment, the same figure as at the end of 2004/5.
  • We inspect and maintain around 240 road bridges, 20 footbridges and 65 other Council bridges across South Ayrshire. Of the 217 road bridges which qualify for the Bridge Assessment Programme, last year there were 23 which did not meet the 40 tonne European requirement. This was three fewer than the year before.
  • Our Winter Maintenance programme tries to keep our roads and pavements as safe as possible during periods of snow and ice.
  • Stocks of 6,000 tonnes of salt are maintained for distribution by 15 gritters, operated by trained and experienced staff, available on a 24-hour basis from October to May.
  • We maintain around 18,500 streetlights and aim to carry out repairs within seven days of faults being reported. In 2005/06 we achieved this 93% of the time, which was slightly worse than the 95% figure of the year before.
  • We want to encourage more people to use public transport. We have now adapted 160 bus stops to allow level boarding and wheelchair access on to buses, 19 more than two years ago.
